I always have to use a VPN now

Posted by Chip23 - 15 hours ago

I haven't been telling you guys this yet but as a NG user from Malaysia, I noticed that since earlier this month (July 2025), Newgrounds loads extremely slowly or doesn't load at all when using my own WiFi and had to rely on a VPN to access Newgrounds instead. It's annoying and I don't want to use the VPN too much. For the past two weeks I was away on a trip to Europe (United Kingdom, France and Switzerland) and when I tried accessing Newgrounds there via my phone, whether it'd be the hotel WiFis or my phone's mobile data (regardless of location and whether that location is Malaysia), there was absolutely no problem at all. Why? In the meantime, I'll have to try other WiFi connections in Malaysia to see if it's only the problem with my WiFi or if it's because of the country I'm in right now...

'Usually', the culprit with slow connections is either the internet service provider or the local infrastructure.

Due to technical limitations, internet providers cannot "guarantee" that they can always have a certain bandwidth. So they sell you "up to [such-and-such]Mbit/s" - often vastly exaggerating what you'll actually get.
And as soon as you access any site that measures connection speed, you'll "magically" get a much better connection. That is because internet providers have their servers _prioritize_ such connections heavily. So they can make the claim that they are as good as they claim they are.

As for the 'local infrastructure', you should ask your "neighbors" (everybody in the wider vicinity of the switchbox your landline connection runs through) what kinds of speeds they are getting when they download large files - and which internet service provider they are using. (Maybe even which contract.)

Other than that...

Maybe you have been watching animations on a 'too optimistic' resolution back home? I don't know how you use NG, but sometimes, there are things you can do to make something work better even under conditions that are "not ideal". ;)

And of course every other person in your household who uses the internet at the same time as you will noticeably throttle your bandwidth.

I hope this helps a little, but you should probably consult with an expert on the matter.
